Rhythm and Love

I bomb atomically,   Socrates' philosophies and hypothesis can't define how I be droppin these mockeries, lyrically perform armed robbery. Flee with the lottery, ..

Its not everyday you hear something that will change your persona, state of mind and way you look at life. It is said that music is equally addictive as alcohol and drugs. I believe its not just any music that can have this effect. Everyone has a certain beat, symphony, rhyme, lyric, instrument that get them going. something that gives them that instant music high. For someone, maybe you the quote above does not make sense but for others it takes them to a certain place, a certain world, a certain time. I have seen over twenty people come from different parts of a hall, converge in the center and reciting those lines. So what is your poison. I found mine, Wu-Tang Clan's Triumph  The track from the 1997 album still sounds brand new to me every time it comes on my playlist. It is the song that made me a fan. It is the song that made me love hip hop. Now some people look at me crazy reciting lyrics and drawing Wu-Tang signs anywhere and everywhere i can. Maybe they have not found their drum. I think music is personal and touches us in different ways. Some more than others. I dont know about you but I wanna Rock right now!!!!

Harvest of Thorns

There are many writings in various genres that seek to document the Zimbabwean War of Liberation; but I think Harvest Of Thorns, a work of fiction by Shimmer Chinodya, is one of the few that tell of the transition between white dominated Southern Rhodesia, through the war of liberation to the new black regime in a vivid, yet simple narrative; candid, straight forward and engaging; a story that many of the past and present generations can understand, relate to, enjoy while actually learning something about why the war had to happen, how it happened, and what it achieved, against the backdrop of society’s general expectations; and finally, the effects of the war and the scars that it left.

Born in 1957, Shimmer Chinodya is an award winning Zimbabwean writer whose first work was published in 1982. Over the years, he has written many books, poems, stories and tales, and, though it appears his target audience is the younger generations, Harvest of Thorns is a book that will appeal to anyone because of the forthright way in which it is written. Harvest of Thorns was his fourth novel, and it won the Best Book category for the 1990 Commonwealth Writers regional prize. His other books include Dew in the Morning (1982) Farai’s Girls (1984) and Child of War. Over the years, he has written Short Stories, Plays and Poems for Primary Schools. Harvest of Thorns has also been used in Secondary Schools as an English Literature Set Book.

Harvest of Thorns is set in Colonial Zimbabwe, through the movement from the political passivity prevalent in Rhodesia, through the growing resistance against colonialism. It goes into the Liberation Struggle and ending in the aptly titled and very disappointing harvest of thorns. Shimmer Chinodya successfully takes the reader through these stages by the depiction of the lives of the Tichafa family; from the simple and humble background of Shamiso Mhaka, Benjamin’s mother, and his father, Clopas Tichafa. The book also depicts their courtship, their marriage, and their problem of childlessness that saw them seeking help from doctors and traditional healers; and ultimately turning to the Church that in turn strongly discouraged any political involvement.

The story is told in a very straight forward, realistic and captivating narrative. The reader will definitely be transported back to the colonial and post colonial times. There is no finger pointing or blame, but it leaves the reader in a position to appreciate the reasons why war happened. It allows the reader draw personal conclusions about why people still ended up being disappointed despite having made painful sacrifices to gain their independence. Harvest of Thorns is an excellent book that is well worth reading. Captivating and irresistible, whatever one’s reasons for reading it, the book will not disappoint. Although it is set in a particular time, it remains a timeless read.

Boredom

Boredom is defined as the state of being bored. Bored being a dull, repetitious, or uninteresting person, activity, or state, according to the english dictionary. Dull and uninteresting are uninteresting are all words that are open to individual opinion. this therefore means the only constant to boredom is repetitiveness. This means the as humans we can only take so much of routine. Do the same thing over and over sooner or later becomes boring. This is relevant also to things that may be be routine in particular.
There are things we do at a random set place. These are people we see, checking our social networks and regular recreational activity. We may not have a set time and place to do these therefore we do not realise how repetitive they are. A good example is Facebook. As people discovered Facebook they become so hooked on it that there were on it 24/7. This resulted in people later claiming of "being bored of Facebook".
Entertainment is the certified cure of boredom. it is created to rid our lives of boredom. How then do we proceed when entertainment becomes boring? We move from Facebook to twitter? And when twitter becomes boring, to Instagram? How long is it until we get nostalgic and miss Facebook? I find myself bored surrounded by all sorts of entertainment and interaction but I am still bored. How do i cure myself then from this state? I know someone will most likely say try something new. When people say this, they don not wait to think about accessibility, yes in another life i could go try sky driving or snow boarding.

Something in the air

So you chilling with a couple of friends, and another one walks in. As soon as they walk in, you realize that there is a change or scent in the air. Unfortunately it is not a welcome change, it is more odor than scent.  You do not make a big deal of it and before you know it, you cannot smell it anymore.
Over time you realize every-time you meet that friend they have that odor. You also realize that it is shear sweat. So how do you play this one out? You are not in a position to tell them to invest in roll-on without offending in. There is also a possibility that they have roll-on but they are either resistant to it or don not use it . Any ideas on how to deal with what in the air?

Paintball

I always wondered what it was like being a soldier. The adrenaline of being in battle is unimaginable. Upon realising I was not joining the army anytime soon or being an action hero I thought I would never know. This was until I went paintballing. Paintballing is an affordable, fun and safe way to get your adrenaline pumping while playing with guns. Although it does not have real guns, there is an immense sense of excitement and power. So you can round up your friends, break up into teams and go to war against each other. You can pick from various battlefields depending on how intense you want the battle to be. my personal favorite was the jungle one with no barricades, just trees and grass. it gave a real feeling of war. So you should take somee time and check it out.

Money's Worth

Over the years I have been caught in a situation where by I bought something and after a short while it would become faulty. What makes it even more frustrating is that this is common amongst things that do not come with a guarantee. I remember buying a pair of classic sneakers with money I had got for my twenty first birthday from my grandmother. Like with most new pairs of shoes, they become my ‘special ones’. However after wearing them two or three times within a couple months the sole tore. I was literally heartbroken because of the amount of money I had spent on them and the sentimental value they carried. I am sure a lot of people share my sentiments on faulty goods you cannot get a replacement for because you have used it. However there is a knight in shining armour that has come to save the day, The Consumer Protection Act.
As with most government acts I initially did not pay much attention to The Consumer Protection Act. It was only later once I discovered the purpose and power of the act that I realised how it affects me and everyone. The main purpose of the act is to protect and increase the welfare of the consumer. This means that the act outlines your rights as a consumer. It seeks to protect the consumer from unfair and improper practises carried out within the market. The Act is also not only limited to purchases, it also affects conduct and contractual agreements between companies and consumers.

No Homo?

Hip hop culture has been infamous for being homophobic, but recent events bring that to question. Frank Ocean, a singer/ songwriter recently 'come out the closet', announcing he is by-sexual. Although he shocked the hip hop industry, fans and the world he surprisingly received a lot of support from peers and fans. Various artists suck as Tyler The Creator, Busta Rhymes, Beyonce and many more tweeted and commented applauding his honesty.
Phrases such as 'no homo'and 'thats guy' have been used rampantly in the hip hop culture. No homo is used as a disclaimer to clarify or distance oneself from statements that may be ambiguous and seem to be of a homosexual nature in a certain context. This saves as evidence of how hip hop culture as distanced its self from the gay society. Derogatory words for homosexuals such as fagg*t, f*g and fruity have been used as a way of cursing or expressing disrespect for heterosexual people. So one may question the sudden embracing of Frank Ocean's sexuality.
One can suspect that the embracing of homosexuality may be more of a public relations stunt by the artists who have shown support. On the other hand some of these people may respect Ocean's honesty more than his sexuality. There has long been rumors about rap stars who are by-sexual or living double lives on the down low. So the fact that Ocean has come out in an industry that is very septic towards homosexuality is a great display of honesty and courage in which anyone can respect that. And for that I too respect Frank Ocean for. One can wonder whether he is the first of many to come out.

Nothing

So I have nothing to blog about this week. But what makes something anything and nothing nothing? So can me writing about nothing still be regarded as nothing? So I wonder whether nothing really exists or it is just an excuse people abuse. I have been asked what is on my mind a lot of times and my answer was nothing. I have been asked what I just said and my answer was nothing. Does that make me a blatant lie or it is just a reflex action.
I think that there is no such thing as nothing. What we perceive as nothing might just be an alternate thing to what we are looking for. So we do not find what we are looking for, that which is present we choose not to register it so we call it nothing. You can refer to the concept of doing nothing. Can you ever do nothing or what you do at that time does not feel important enough to be labelled anything.
So have I been writing about nothing? Have you been reading nothing? If you can make sense of it is it now something or its nothing if I am not making any sense? I think nothing does not exist. If its

Three Is A Crowd

When a situation gets sticky people tend to look for phrases to justify their actions. But when do these phrases and quotes become a cliche and when are they relevant. Couples use 'three is a crowd' to get privacy for intimate moments and conversations. On the other hand people use it to excuse themselves from situation were they would be deemed as the 'candle holder'or 'pant hanger'. This meaning they want feel uncomfortable around a couple and therefore feel like they are intruding in the couples personal space.
I feel this phrase goes deeper than these light social situations. Women are generally regarded as being more about their relationships to their friends than men. This is cool when they are bragging about how good he is and making the friends jealous. It is only when things get sour that the sharing becomes a problem.
So she has been bragging and the friends are jealous; now things are bad, how do the friends react? All of a sudden everyone becomes an agony aunt and a Dr. Phil. There is nothing wrong with getting advise from friends or even family. There is however a thin line between advise and being told what to do. This is when the bias comes in. When you get advise on someone about someone else it is never objective as it is influenced by the person's feelings toward the person and subject in question.
I feel this is when three is a crowd. If something happens between two people until it is evident they cannot solve it on their own it is better they try deal with it between themselves. This is because the people know each other better and understand each other better. When a third party comes in and hears ones side of a story then throws in their two sense, it usually results in a simple issue being blown out of proportion. I think that is why people find it better talking to strangers or even posting their problems on social networks. They are looking for an unbiased perspective, but that is a topic for another day.
So to my lady friends before you go cry to your friends about what he did, try deal with it with him first. If that does not work, get advise not instructions because at the end of the day it is just the two of you in that bed, unless...........

Nostalgia

It has been 8 years since I recorded my first song. It featured one of my closest friends and hip hop mentor Prophecy (then Pricey). i remember my heart pounding through out the recording session. I stood in that booth with sweaty palms, nervous out of my mind, but is was the most liberating feeling ever. Watching a creation unfold. Felt like I was on top of the world.
Now it almost a decade later what has changed. I am no longer intimidated by a recording booth or any artist. I can go head to head with any rapper out there. I can now produce my own beats. As much as I feel I am more versatile, I feel less dominant. Where did it all go wrong?
I could not have a pen and paper in my hands and not scribble a verse or a couple bars. Lines upon lines and tunes played in my mind all day, everyday. I was tormented by having all these ideas and material to make music but no outlet as i was stuck in my high school hostel. I would save up pocket money for studio time on the holidays, just to get a chance to express myself in music form. Most around me could not understand the drive I had and some even called me crazy.
Over thirty songs later, award nominations, national television and radio guest appearances I found myself stuck somewhere in oblivion. The hunger, the zeal, the ideas and at times i fear even the passion is gone. So where it it all go wrong? Maybe life has got the better of me. Being a father and university creative arts student, maybe I have less mental time for my own artist creation. All i do is hope to have the feeling I had when I made Roll Deep in 2003 once again.

Bacteria Infested

Everyday people make fuss about hygiene, which is not a bad thing. However we tend to be selective bout our hygienic tendencies. How many germs are on that tap after washing your hands or that cellphone you texting with while eating?
I  argue with my friends about finding hair in food. My theory is if eating hair was dangerous, the human race would have join the dinosaurs a long time ago. Not that i support hair in my food, but i just think people over-react when it comes to these things. Babies by nature put everything in their mouth, by then the body is already
recognizing the germs and which ones it can handle. So we may find germs all around us, but how many actually harm us.
So surely there is food poisoning and all that but i think we are being driven to a state of paranoia. People kiss everyday, share cigarettes and drinks how many germs do we exchange then. we handle money while doing everything. How much bacteria is on a note? A extreme case is oral sex. expect for sexually transmitted diseases, I don not know of anyone who has ever got an upset tummy after performing oral sex. So what should we be afraid off and what should we not be afraid off?

Digital Sentiment

People have always placed sentimental value on the things they value and are attached to. Traditionally gifts, art work, clothing and other items of a similar nature have had sentimental value placed on them. So as the world becomes more digital by the by, how much are we attached to our gadgets on a sentimental level?

I have been using my phone for about 2 years even though i have had through other phones within those years. After two years it has gone through a number of issues but still kicking. The most recent however was the screen cracking, which was a huge blow. As soon as it happened all my friends were quick to say its a sign to replace it. It was only when I realised how unappealing the decision to replace my phone is, then it clicked how attached I am to it.
So I have been trying to figure whether I just like my phone or I really value it sentimentally.

A Pure Leap

It was not too far back when a 5 mega pixel camera on a phone seemed out of this world. Now technology is taking leaps instead of steps and Nokia just took a big one. The Nokia 808 PureView has just taken tha game to another level with its 41 mega-pixel camera.

The average smartphone currently has a 5 mega-pixel -12 mega-pixel camera and no one has really been complaining. Now that Nokia has taken a leap to 41MP, are they changing the game or just getting ahead of themselves. The device is a capable smartphone but besides the camera can it keep up with the rest. 16gb of internal memory, 512 RAM, 1.3 GHz it is rather quite standard in the current market. In a world of dual core and quad core phones on the rise, the device lacks in several ways. It is certainly no contender for iPhone 4S and even the Sony Xperia S.

Nokia might have wanted to invest their splendid camera on a more powerful device like their Lumia series phones. For a 41MP camera each photo is roughly 10MB, so with apps, music and games in mind 16GB is rather small amount of space. So hopefully nokia will put a similar camera in a more powerfull and bigger device sooon.

Men In Skirts

Fashion is constantly evolving and revolving. Music is arguably the most influential source of fashion trends amongst youth. This is because musicians are viewed as icons by their fan base. Hip Hop artists Diddy and Kid Cudi have wore Kilts before and now Kanye West. Of the trhree Kanye is the most influential and flamboyent fashion wise. This makes one wonder how influential Kanye can get.

When Kanye West blew up as a rapper around 2005, his dress code instantly stood out. Kanye was one off the first hip hop artist to wear straight and slim fit jeans. What seemed to be taboo at the time soon became a trend globally. The slim fit look soon took over the traditional baggy hip hop look. So what does Kanye West have in store for hip hop fashion.

Kanye was spotted rocking a leather kilt while performing for the N*ggaz In Paris music video with Jay-Z. Although one may view this as one of Kanye's outrageous moments, it might be a matter of time before Kilts are the hottest thing in urban fashion.

The Hangover Cure

Everyone has a theory or recommendation on the best way to cure a hangover. It does however appear that each person has a unique method that works for them. The question that remains is whether there is a standard cure for a hangover with a scientific backing.

I am always fighting with my friends on whether to drink whiskey or vodka. They argue that its only because I prefer vodka that i say it causes less or no hangover. It is however a true that clear liquors such as vodka, gin, rum and white wine have less congeners  that cause hangovers compared to dark liquors like whiskey, brandy and red wine.

Hangovers are mainly caused by dehydration in the body. The headaches and fatigue are a result of the body organs absorbing fluid in the body. Therefore remedies like drinking more the next day or eating raw eggs with hot sauce may seem to work but are not full proof.

Therefore the best way to treat a hangover is to ensure the body is hydrated before and after drinking. You should then eat and have a glass of water before drinking, try drink water in between drinks and before going to bed. Eating in the morning and having vitamins via fruits and juices will speed up the recovery process from a hangover.
